Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shatrughan Sinha) are best friends who work on opposite sides of the law. Vijay is a cop, and Ravi is an attorney; one catches crooks, and the other bails them out. When they meet the same woman, Sheetal (Zeenat Aman), on the same day, they both fall in love. Vijay wins her heart initially, though, and Ravi is saddened. Their love for Sheetal creates a rivalry between them for the first time in their lives.
