| | | Slumdog has lived up to the hype created around it. It hasn’t gotten those Oscar nominations for nothing. This art piece extraordinaire takes you on a unique journey of a downtrodden kid from a slum on his way to becoming a millionaire. Most of the time it has stayed true to the novel Q&A Vikas Swarup with some changes here and there. It’s Jamal’s journey in life, who wins Indian version of the game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and is surrounded by controversies regarding his winning. Not only is there a controversy, Jamal’s even pulled into vicious interrogation by the cops just because he’s from slum and may not have the knowledge to win the show. And he also narrates the story of Latika, his only love how he met and lost her. This movie takes you on a rollercoaster of joy, happiness, hope, surprise and revulsion at times.Danny Boyle, who has directed flicks like 28 Days Later and Trainspotting has come up with an out and out brilliant entertainer based on India. Nowhere do you see the disconnect of it being directed by a non-Indian. It’s directed that beautifully. Excellent performances by the cast as well. Frieda Pinto who is a first timer is amazing. And Dev Patel already is seen in an American teenage soap, Skins and he’s excellent as well. And music? Rahman’s nominations and Golden Globe should give you an idea, though I’d say Ringa Ringa somehow resembles Choli Ke Peeche. That could’ve been avoided.Seventymm’s verdict? A definite thumbs up and its addition to the must-watch list. |
