| | | Long time coming | | | | The past couple of years seem to have been all about sequels in Bollywood. Hera Pheri (2000), was followed by its equally successful sequel in 2006.
However, these sequels have released or will be releasing within five years of the original (with the exception of the Hera Pheri series). Recently, Boney Kapoor announced his intention to make the sequel to Mr India, more than 20 years after the original’s release. Unlike the other follow-ups, the audience for the Mr India sequel will be different because of the two-decade gap. Will that affect the way they connect to the film?
Not if the makers know what they’re doing, says director Kunal Kohli. “And I’m sure they do. They know what a cult film Mr India is, so I’m sure they have a wonderful script,” he says. What if some aspects of the original are changed? “That shouldn’t matter. The first Munna Bhai ended with Munna getting married, and in the next one he had a different girlfriend. No one questioned anything,” he counters.
