| | | Good to be gay? | | | | The only problem is that Bollywood’s new leading pair isn’t really gay, but just masquerading as a homosexual couple because they want to get a flat. And what’s touted by critics as the funniest scene in Dostana — the story Abhishek Bachchan cooks up about how he fell in love with John Abraham — is full of clichés about gay men. Should the movie have dispensed with the stereotypical image of gay men and opted for a more sensitive portrayal?
Gay rights activist Vinay Chandran didn’t expect anything more than the routine treatment Dostana gave the subject. “The portrayal is problematic as it’s stereotypical. It won’t be problematic unless it’s honest, and if it’s honest it’ll be problematic and there’ll be protests against the movie,” he says. Vinay, however, commends the movie for one thing: “The reviews in mainstream media are so casual about the fact that the lead actors pretend to be gay. We haven’t seen that before”............... | | |
