Signalling the end of a decade-long estrangement between her family and the Bachchans, Sonia Gandhi personally asked the All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva to call up Vilasrao Deshmukh and inquire about the well-being and safety of the Bachchans.

Concerned about the free run Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers were getting in Mumbai to attack Bachchan and his films – the Mumbai premiere of his latest film, The Last Lear, was cancelled on Wednesday – Gandhi got Alva to phone the Maharashtra CM. “Soniaji is very concerned about what is happening in Mumbai. She’s not happy about the manner in which the Bachchan family has been targeted. She wants the government to take prompt action. Deshmukh has promised to rein in the hotheads,” revealed Alva.

“Soniaji wanted a detailed report from me and that is why I spoke to Vilasrao before briefing her,” she added.............
